本片改編自美國1973年三冠王的真實故事。美國賽馬史上1970年代有匹名叫 Secretariat 的神駒，打破了25年來的紀錄，在1973年勇奪全美賽馬三冠王的頭銜『Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing』，這匹馬後來被運動雜誌評為美國二十世紀最偉大的50位運動員之一，也是名單上唯一一位非人類的得主。
1968年潘妮 Penny Chenery (黛安蓮恩飾演)接管了父親的馬場 Meadow Stable 生意，她不僅沒有賣掉馬場，還希望繼續父親曾在賽馬事業上的輝煌。
她的一匹小馬「秘書」Secretariat 比賽時後勁十足，贏得了普瑞克涅斯大賽和貝蒙特賽馬的冠軍，照片甚至登上「時代雜誌」、「新聞周刊」及「體育畫報」等著名雜誌封面，成為家喻戶曉的動物明星，潘妮的事業因此輝煌一時。

How fast did Secretariat run?
In the Belmont, In the stretch, Secretariat opened a 1/16 mile lead on the rest of the field. At the finish, he won by 31 length, the fastest 1½ miles on dirt in history, 2:24 flat, which broke the stakes record by more than 2 seconds. This works out to a speed of 37.5 mph for his entire performance. Secretariat's world record still stands, and in fact, no other horse has ever broken 2:25 for 1½ miles on dirt.
